Heathkit model CI-1020
Automotive Timing Light
Date Calibrated: _____/_____/_____
Calibration Procedure
♦ Avoid contact with the two leads of the strobe tube when connected to the battery due to potential high voltage.
( ) With the top cover off, temporarily secure the high voltage cable and the two battery cables with either a rubber band or masking tape. (This will help prevent damage to the wire lead connections on the circuit board.)
( ) Adjust the 200 ohm control maximum clockwise.

ADJUSTMENT USING THE NEON LAMP
Refer to Figure 1
( ) Connect the red (+) battery cable clip to the positive (+) terminal of an automotive battery or to the positive terminal of an independent 15 VDC power supply.
( ) Connect the black (-) battery cable clip to the negative (-) terminal of an automotive battery or to the negative or ground terminal of an independent 15 VDC power supply.
( ) Press and hold the pushbutton switch (a faint squealing noise is normal).
( ) Adjust the 200 ohm control until the neon lamp just begins to glow.
( ) Release the pushbutton.
( ) Disconnect the two battery clips.
( ) Carefully remove the rubber band and/or masking tape securing the high voltage cable and the battery cables to the handle.
( ) Re-attach the case cover.
( ) Calibration procedure is complete.

ADJUSTMENT USING A DC VOLTMETER
Refer to Pictorial 3 and Figure 2
( ) Set the voltmeter scale to one capable of reading 600 VDC.
( ) Connect the positive voltmeter lead to the “L” neon lamp lead (near the top edge of the circuit board).
( ) Connect the negative voltmeter lead to the “K” neon lamp lead (near the bottom edge of the case).
( ) Connect the red (+) battery cable clip to the positive terminal of an automotive battery or to the positive terminal of an independent 15 VDC power supply.
( ) Connect the black (-) battery cable clip to the negative terminal of an automotive battery or to the negative or ground terminal of an independent 15 VDC power supply.
( ) Press and hold the pushbutton switch (a faint squealing noise is normal).
( ) Adjust the 200 ohm control until the voltmeter reads 600 VDC.
( ) Release the pushbutton.
♦ Disconnect the battery leads from the battery or power supply first to avoid potentially high voltages on the voltmeter leads.
( ) Disconnect the two battery clips.
( ) Disconnect the two voltmeter leads.
( ) Carefully remove the rubber band and/or masking tape securing the high voltage cable and the battery cables to the handle.
( ) Re-attach the cover.
( ) Calibration procedure is complete.
