An outstanding buy in its power class, the DX-40 provides both phone and CW operation on
80 through 10 meters. A single 6146 tube is used in the final amplifier stage to provide
full 75 watt plate power input on CW or controlled carrier modulation peaks up to 60 watts
for phone operation. Modulator and power supplies are built-in and single-knob bandswitching
is combined with the pi network output circuit for complete operating convenience. A high
quality D'Arsonval movement panel meter is used to indicate the final grid or plate current.
A line filter and liberal shielding provides high stability and minimizes television interference.
The 5-position function switch provides a "tune" position, allowing you to tune the oscillator
with the final amplifier off preventing damage to the final amplifier tube. Provision is made
for three crystals easily reached through a "trap door" in the back of the cabinet. A 4-position
switch selects any of the three crystals or a jack for external VFO. The Heathkit Model VF-I VFO
(variable frequency oscillator) can be used in place of crystals. Power for the VFO is available
on the rear apron of the chassis. You can build this rig yourself and be proud to show it off to
your fellow hams. Assembly proceeds smoothly from start to finish even for an individual who has
never built electronic equipment before.
